Created for the American Anthropological Association's Anthropology of Consciousness Conference 2021 as part of the panel: “Evocative Ethnographies of Florida’s Silver River: Biodiversity, Boundaries, Life Experiences, and Conservation.” Combining footage from the 1954 cult scifi/horror film, Creature from the Black Lagoon, with original underwater footage, this work presents a multispecies sensory perspective through the eyes of the “creature,” as a comment on how Hollywood ‘creature feature’ tropes tend to vilify aspects of the “natural” and reinforce patriarchal and colonial value structures in our collective unconscious.
